From May 29 to 30, the Division of International Studies at Hanyang University (HYU) held its very first MUN conference. MUN, which stands for “Model United Nations” is an activity where each of the participants play a role of a delegate from a member nation of the United Nations to simulate real UN committees. The delegates spend time attempting to solve real-world problems from the perspective of each of their designated countries. In the first Hanyang MUN (HMUN) conference, there was a total of four committees from which the students could choose, which included the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM). Through HMUN, the participants are expected to improve their discussion and negotiation skills and understand the different connections or relationships that exist within the international community. The students will also be able to look upon the issues of the United Nations and the international community from different perspectives through the experience of understanding and discussing the given agendas. Park So-hee, the Secretary-General of HMUN, mentioned the difficulty that she and the staff had in preparing the very first MUN at HYU. She talked about how they faced many problems as it was everyone’s first time, therefore having no prior experience to rely on. Furthermore, the fact that the conference had to be held online due to the current situation of the global pandemic was another obstacle they had to overcome. Regardless, Secretary-General Park shared her hopes in making history here at HYU. She hopes that this MUN will help become the start of a HMUN community for those interested in the global society.
