The dictionary definition of a friend is “a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection”. Of course, the definition of a friend may vary from person to person, ranging from a family member to even a co-worker. Having a friend is like the gift of life, sharing every piece of emotion and passion you ever desire. On the contrary, losing one feels like the kind of pain no expression in the world could possibly describe. Maintaining a relationship can be as challenging as keeping a snowman from melting. However, building one only requires minimal effort such as a hello or a smile. You can even get a head start by simply saying good morning to a neighbor.

The rush of non-contact culture has definitely put a restraint on making new friends. However, that does not mean you should stay away from all others. The 349th edition discusses topics such as child abuse, exploitation, and pollution. The more I learn about these topics, the more obvious it seems that they are all results of neglect. The lack of care and attention lies at the root of the most traumatic incidents. Unfortunately, there is only so much you can do after the damage is done. On the positive side, however, there is one way to solve this problem: simply pay attention and acknowledge those around you.

Ask how they are doing, what is new in their life, and if they need any help. Maybe you can make someone’s day by saying those few words. If you get lucky, that person might even return the favor when you really need it. Personally, I would like to take this time to thank my fellow reporters, family, and friends for helping me become the best version of myself. I will not hesitate when they need me to take on the same role in their lives. And you? When was the last time you ever wrote to your friend?
